The Following are a few facts about our school which may be of interest to you:

We are enrolling our 60th First and Second Year classes for 2008-2009.

We're educating for life and faith formation is our reason for being.  Faith life of the child is not separate from his or her regular academic learning.  Being raised in the catholic tradition means opportunities to work and pray and play  together whether it is  actively participating in planning the weekly Children’s Mass, celebrating special feast days in school, class retreats,  Stations of the Cross, daily prayer, special Marian devotions, sacramental preparation and having religion class take as much of their  scheduled day as each of the other three R’s   The eighth year class joins the parish group traveling to Washington DC each January to give witness to their belief  in the importance of Life.  The annual March for Life is attended by hundreds of thousands of people from all over the country.  This year’s class came back and reported at how surprised they were to find so many other kids their age who came to Wash ington for the same reason!

Academic Excellence is the bonus you give your child when you give the gift of a faith based great beginning that will last a lifetime!  With Terra Nova scores well above the national average teachers and students at Holy Child are continually working on new challenges.

  1. Spanish (K to 8) adds the discipline of studying a second language to the curriculum.

  2. Arts’ alive at Holy Child with an emphasis on drama, art and music.  The sound of the school bands (4th to 8th) ringing through the building tells us a spring concert is coming.  We are celebrating the fact that  Advanced Band members have been selected for the PMEA Elementary Concert as well as the Diocesan South Honors  Band again this year.  We knew they were good and now other people will know it too!

  3.  As the 2007 Battle of the Books “ First Place ” School  HCC students in 4th, 5th and 6th year are preparing to defend their title by reading the 2008 Battle of the Books selections.  A Parent/Teacher/Student cooperative is busy looking for the perfect questions as they read all twelve books in this annual challenge between schools.

  4. The annual school play starts to develop as classroom plays in the elementary levels. Once students reach 6th they are ready to try out for  THE PLAY which is always in May!   Auditions just finished for this year’s production “The Enchanted Beauty” (Beauty and the Beast).

Academic Excellence is the bonus you give your child when you give the gift of a faith based great beginning that will last a lifetime!  With Terra Nova scores well above the national average teachers and students at Holy Child are continually working on new challenges.

While we have one of the oldest full day kindergarten programs in the South Hills (1970), something new is always happening in kindergarten.  In recent years a few students have tried to come for 1/2 day but beg Mom and Dad to let them stay for the day because they don't want to miss a thing!  This year Mrs. Deborah Harrison, our kindergarten teacher and her students are enjoying their year piloting a new Language Arts program...SuperKids!   They like learning the names of the SuperKids and using the ice cream scoop paper while practicing their printing.  The kinders like to work with their Amigos from 6th year in class and when they take them to church for Mass.

Mrs. Chris Rose and Ms. Tracy Swank are challenging their 2nd and 3rd year math students with a math supplemental program called Simple Solutions that is being piloted this year.  All students in Levels 3 through 8 have individual subscriptions to the on-line First in Math Challenge 24 Program. This program is accessible in school and at home.  Students in Levels 4 through 8 will be competing in the school Math 24 Tournament with winners moving on to the Diocesan competition in May.

Our all school internet cable access is being expanded into a school-wide Wireless Computer system.   Students have access to several web based programs including K to the 8th Power, a computer literacy and applied technology skills program which can be used at home as well as in school.  Skills introduced in school can be further developed as homework that is graded and saved for teacher review.  Vocabulary Workshop,  Math 24 and the K to 8 programs are web-based programs used by the students that offer opportunities  to enhance the basic concepts being taught in school.

We just finished a semester full of interesting opportunities that gave parents a chance to step into the classroom  (Junior Achievement Day and Career Day, the Stock Market Game and the Great Apple Crunch Day)as well as extracurricular opportunities that included judging in the PJAS (Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science) Region 7 competition.  We are beginning our second semester of extra curricular activities.

The Battle of the Books Teams (4th, 5th, and 6th) are reading and preparing to keep the BB First Place Plaque for another year.   Holy Trinity and St. Joe’s Teams are working hard also to take it from us.   Students volunteer to read a selection of 12 books and prepare to compete with other schools answering questions on what they have read.  (Each school selects 4 titles)   Teachers and Parent Volunteers act as coaches for the teams reading the books and writing questions that might be asked in the Battle .

Eighth Year Students qualify each year for the Bishop Canevin Scholars Program which began as a cooperative effort between Canevin and our school in 1988.  This year four students spend the first two periods every morning at Canevin in Geometry, Honors Algebra I and Science classes. They then return to HCC for the rest of their academic day. Students have to score in the 90% or above on their terra Nova Math scores to qualify for this program.
